Petrol Price comparison – update

Back in February, we started some analysis (to the end of January) of the price movement trends for the price of a barrel of oil compared to the average recorded price of a litre of petrol as reported by The AA every month.

This I have now updated for the month of February. The average price of a barrel of oil increased over the month (by about $3.50) while the average price of a litre of petrol in Ireland decreased (by 2c).

It’ll be interesting to see how things move for March given the increases in the cost of a barrel of oil over the past couple of weeks.

If you factor in the slide in the value of the dollar against the euro I suspect these two graphs might come much closer.

There are interesting cariations in price. On my daily commute the average petrol price last week was between 1.19 and 1.20. But in one petrol station (which I now use all the time) it was 1.11 or 1.06 if you also buy a car wash. Every time I go there there are constantly queues to get on the pumps. They are even cheaper than the Tesco filling station in the town.

I’m not sure if plugs are allowed but the station is applegreen in Clonmel. Apparently they are a new chain starting up around the country.

If they can do it for 1.11 why can’t the larger chains?
