Consumer News Weekend Short Stack

A few short snippets to get you through the weekend:

  • SIMI Scaremongering Again – Last Sunday saw a news story in many national media referring to a survey that the SIMI did on cars being imported from the UK. Such UK imports are further endangering the businesses of SIMI members through lost sales, so anything they can do to keep Irish people buyin cars at home is obviously in their own self interest. While the point of the survey may have some validity, it should always be remembered to check the source of the story before taking it at face value.
  • More on car sales – What’s the most innovative thing you’ve seen a garage do in order to try to sell you a car? In a recent article I wrote for the Irish News of the World I discussed this, but from the US comes a great idea. I can’t remember the name of the manufacturer, but their offer is that any new car they sell on a credit package can be returned no questions asked should the buyer lose their job. Now there’s some innovation that might ease the concerns of potential purchasers.
  • Don’t think “closing down” sales offer the best value - Again from the US, and this time from the Consumerist, is a story that should confirm to us that “closing down” sales will actually offer some of the worst value going. Think about it – the company needs to make as much money as possible before closing their doors to pay off all their debts and their staff. In such situations, they’re unlikely to be giving stuff away for half nothing.
  • 2009 Irish Blog Awards - Well, sadly, ValueIreland.com didn’t make it to the final of the Best Specialist Blog category sponsored by IQ Content. The final 5 excellent blogs who did are available here. The awards are tonight and unfortunately I can’t be there. It’s looking like it’ll be a great night, so best of luck to all.
