Consumer News Weekend Short Stack

Here’s a few short notes for the weekend:

  • Irish News of the World – In case you think missed me in tomorrows edition, you won’t have. Last Sunday was my last Sunday to write my column for the good folks in the Irish News of the World. After 6 months, other priorities have to be looked after instead. I learned a huge amount in that time, and really enjoyed doing it.
  • Supervalu grocery price cuts – Following the lead of Tesco, Dunnes and Marks & Spencer, Supervalu this week announced across the board grocery price cuts. According to this story on the Irish Times site, “Supervalu rolled out €86m worth of fresh price reductions. It takes to €200m, the number of price cuts the store says have been implemented since the beginning of the year.”  It went on “Supervalu says that almost 2000 product lines on its shelves have fallen in price since the beginning of the year and claims that the cost of an average weekly trolley of goods across its 194 independently owned stores has fallen 23 per cent or €30, from €129.96 to €98.56.”
  • Buying Irish – That same Supervalu article quotes the managing director of Supervalu, Donal Horgan, “75 per cent of everything on SuperValu’s shelves is sourced or produced in Ireland and this is set to continue”. He said the company’s dealings with Irish suppliers and producers was worth in excess of €2.85 billion every year to the Irish economy and indirectly supported 14,000 Irish jobs. How’s your buying Irish going? While our government spends their money on getting European election documents and so on from UK companies, the Chinese government makes a particular effort to support their domestic companies with their stimulus package. Despite all the protests, who’s right?
  • IPhone Grocery Applications – With all the recent talk of the new IPhone and the every expanding App Store, I did a little digging around in there for my own IPod Touch. I was amazed how many grocery shopping list type applications there are in there – for free, and to buy. Has anyone actually downloaded and used one of these? Post a comment below, or drop me an e-mail – I’d love to here how you use it here in Ireland and what your thoughts are on its usefulness.
