How to find a cheap hotel?

In the last few weeks I’ve been looking for well priced hotels for planned trips both within Ireland and in the UK. Here’s the sequence that I go through in my searching, but I’m interested to know how you go about finding a cheap, but decent, hotel?

Post your tips in the comments below.

  1. Firstly I check Hotels.comI’ve used this site most in the past, and keep going back mainly out of loyalty.
  2. Cross reference with TripAdvisor.comIf I find a hotel that I’m interested in, I’ll check here to see what others have to say about it to make sure it’s okay.
  3. Check with the hotel website – Next I’ll go to the hotels website to see if they have any special offers and to get more details on facilities and so on.
  4. Ring the hotel directly – Finally, I’ll give the hotel a call to see if there’s any better offers available, or maybe see about getting any extras for making a booking.

Is there anything else I should be adding to this based on your own hotel searches?

Have you used Priceline? Here hotels can get rid of unused rooms without advertising lower prices.

Priceline is only good for Dublin in Ireland but abroad it never fails. We stayed at a lovely 4 star near Regents Park in London last Saturday night for £117 total after my bid of $155 was accepted (I bid over 3 days, $100, $120 and then $155 as it was only a day before we left and I wanted to get it sorted).
