Today marks the 6th birthday of ValueIreland.com. Set up in the evenings during the summer of 2003 while fishing during the day in South West Donegal, it has grown more than I ever expected, and has changed significantly since day one.
When I set up ValueIreland.com that summer 6 years ago, Ireland was at the height of the original phenomonen that was known as “Rip Off Ireland”.
At the time, there was only one other consumer focussed website around – the Boards.ie Rip Off Ireland forum – still in place today.
In the past 6 years, many other websites with a consumer focus have come, and gone but in the past two years particularly there has been a marked increase in the number of Irish consumer focused websites – I count upwards on 78 different sites today.
This is brilliant for Irish consumers – the more information they have to hand, the better they can decide how, where and when to spend their money wisely.
Here’s a graph showing the trends in visitors to the ValueIreland.com website over the past 6 years. It could probably also be an accurate illustration of the growth in the number of consumer focused websites over the years, or even it could be seen as an illustration of much discretionary spending ability that Irish consumers had over the years as well. The higher the number of website visitors on the graph, the less money available to spend in the economy as a whole.
Here’s to another 6 years!
