Roma cafe in Park street in Dundalk

One of the best takeaway or sit down cafes in Ireland. I would like to commend the Roma cafe in Park street in Dundalk, everything is perfect, friendly staff and the owners are very friendly and helpful to, I have being using this restaurant for a long time now and I have still never found any cause to complain, if you order fresh cod it will be cod,100% every time, very good value, very good food, very friendly efficient staff, call in on your way through Dundalk, you wont be dissapointed, take away or sit down.

Food in Skerries

Pasta Pizza very good - Average price and do takeaway food also.

The Orchid Chinese restaurant also very good. Can be quite expensive to eat in but takeaway is very reasonable.

Russells has a very good reasonably priced menu and food is always great.

O'Sheas pub does good food, but menu and opening times seem to change randomly. Connected to The Cottage restaurant next door which has received good reviews.

Stoop Your Head - Food is always brilliant, and contrary to an earlier post I have always found the staff to be most friendly and helpful. You can't book a table here so be prepared to have a drink while you're waiting.

The Parachute Cafe is great for breakfasts and snacks. Very reasonably priced.

If you're into Indian food then go to O'Shea's on the harbour in Balbriggen. Only open a couple of months but great food and deserves you support.

Brunch in Cafe Java, Main Street, Blackrock

With the queues to get into this place on a Saturday and a Sunday, that many people can't go wrong.

Price wise, you're talking about €25 for brunch for 2, with maybe 2 coffees each (no free refills....).

It's definitely not cheap at the price, but for me, it's definitely value for money, and about the best place I've found for brunch so far in Blackrock.

Food is very tasty and original, services is always good.

Centra Palmerstown

The manager is helpful and friendly enough but the shop keeps running out of basics like cigarettes and bus tickets. I have been told it is the owner that does not order enough. He can be abrasive and harsh. The deli is only ok but staff are friendly. It is clean though as I was there when enviromental health did a spot check and heard her say it was quite good.

Restaurants in Kildare

Lemongrass is fine, if you don't mind westernised Thai food in a noisy and crowded environment.

The ONLY good restaurant in Naas is Kilashee...

Namaste INdian take-away, North King Street

have to agree - the best in Dublin and uber-friendly; I invite friends round for Indian food and that's what they get because it's miles better than anything I could do myself, and they're always delighted.

Wine Value, north of the border.

I have discovered that a trip to Sainsburys in Newry is a well worth while journey for wine drinkers.
They have a superbly stocked wine department and there are many special offers on top class brands every week.I have found that even allowing for the sterling disadvantage I can save 3-4 Euros on a good quality wine which would cost about ten euros in the best value southern shops ,such as Molloys off licence chain.
If you stock up here for Christmas the short Journey from Dublin will be a worthwhile one.

Affordable contraception (condoms) in Ireland

Those of you who are tired of being ripped off by pharmacies and supermarkets, check out www.smartpaddy.ie

Great product range, and prices comparable with mainland Europe. They ship (next day) anywhere within Ireland for a flat rate of €1.40 next day... Discreetly billed, neutral envelope, LASER/VISA/Master accepted, etc

Fully recommended, 10 out of 10.

Buy everything online...

If it isn't food (which you should try to grow yourself) or petrol (Tesco) then buy it on the Internet.

I have a steady stream of things shipped over from either the UK or US. So far I have bought a boat trailer direct from the manufacturer at 50% less than local prices. A Canon EOS300D digital SLR camera, books which are 50% cheaper compared to my local seller, DVDs and CDs all from Amazon. Some people I know built a house in Dingle and ordered every item of furniture from MFI in the UK and they had it all shipped over for just a £25 delivery fee.

Kerry is Rip Off Central. Because it is remote and your average Kerryman is a lazy so and so then the shop owners think they can charge the Earth. Well, when today's crop of children start earning then Kerry's shopkeepers are in for a surprise because Kerry children know how to use a computer.

Another annoying aspect about Kerry shopkeepers is the obligatory short-change by 1 cent. Doesn't hurt the individual though I always complain but if a shopkeeper does it a few hundred times a week then it adds up.

If you can cut out the middlemen then you will save money. Growing food and making your own meals is cheaper than buying ready meals which have a new price tag slapped on them after each process. The same with other goods. The importer slaps a price tag on, which is then replaced by a larger one by the distributor and a larger one by the shopkeeper.

Buy from the UK and buy as high up the chain as you can. The boat trailer manufacturer was easily coaxed into selling to a member of the public.

We are still a rather communal nation compared to the big industrial ones so doing favours and earning credit is another good way to save money. Push a skill, build groups of people to help out in the community. I didn't have a boat until earlier this year when 12 of us got to together and built 12 boats in 3 weeks. Now I catch enough fish to reduce the meat bill.

My project for the coming year? After replacing all light bulbs with compact flourescents my electricity bill is now 55% VAT, standing charge and public service levy. I need to go off-grid. Solar cells, wind power, bio-diesel to power a generator. Whatever it takes. Nobody is charging me double for my electricity.

Where there is a will there is a way, people. All four TV channels are awful. On most days you would think you were living in the US or UK with the rubbish on the box. Get off your As and get active.
