Carmel Foley, Director of Consumer Affairs

"Its all about shopping around, getting the necessary information, learning from others experiences, and acting upon them.  www.ValueIreland.com is a unique and long overdue tool for the Irish consumer in helping get value for money. I urge all consumers to make use of www.ValueIreland.com, and benefit from the information it provides".

Michael Kilcoyne, Chairman, Consumer Association of Ireland

"What's unique about this service is that it's not just one person’s view about good or bad value providers, but it gives people in every county in Ireland the opportunity to share their own good and bad personal accounts of spending their hard earned euro".

Dermott Jewell, Chief Executive, Consumers Association of Ireland

"We do wish you well with your endeavors and thank you for highlighting the needs of consumers and hope that you gain success from the venture."

That is brilliant, thanks so much. I will endeavor to use as many of the tips as possible.

January 16th, 2005

Just finished reading the articles on your site & found it extremely informative, there were a number of facts that I was never aware of, many thanks.

January 13th, 2005

I am from the island of Barbados and I am checking on Clover Queen Cooking Butter made in Ireland I need to know the ingredients used.

(We know!! We didn't know what to say either.)

January 6th, 2005

I found the site great and everyone in the office finds it helpful also.

January 4th, 2005

Good man - Just noted your site in the IT Saturday Magazine. Will certainly be contributing. This is badly needed.

December 19th, 2004

found your site via link from ripoffireland.org and think it is a  very good site (i even posted one reply!).  but one thing is driving me CRAZY!!!  why do you keep putting me over to ezboard.  why can't i just go to whichever discussion view i want (even when replying to your own posting re: where did you hear about us).  maybe it is something i am doing wrong, but if not, it would seriously put me off going back to your site, which is a shame because as i said, i do like it).  thanks,

Response from Value Ireland:

We have followed up with the visitor who sent us this mail, and have attempted to find out what the specific issues and pages concerned are.

November 25th, 2004

Many thanks for your interest and will certainly inform my friends about your web site.

November 22nd, 2004

Your website has been more than helpful for articles and also comments from the public.

November 18th, 2004

I was interested to read your report in this weeks paper. Good luck, and please keep me on your mailing list with any new information.

November 6th, 2004

I heard about you on www.rollercoaster.ie. Its a parenting site but deals with loads of others stuff too. Great site. Keep up the good work!

August 9th, 2004

Hello There, I'm a fan of your site...

30th July, 2004

Your site is interesting and useful for the Irish consumer.

July 25th, 2004

Best of luck with Value Ireland in the future.

July 21st, 2004

As newbie above, saw mention of this site and the FG site in a piece in the Irish Times today.

After checking both out, this one definitely stands out as being more useful.

Love the interactive aspect of the site.

Nice work Value Ireland.

July 20th, 2004

Happy to be using your site. Keep up the good work.

July 19th, 2004

Saw mention of your site, along with others in an article in the Sunday World yesterday.

Congrats on the site. It's an excellent resource, and having checked out the FG site, this one seems to be of much more benefit - definitely more informative.

Keep up the good work!!!!

June 28th, 2004

PS - congrats on the site, it's a very useful service

May 24th, 2004

Like the web site, well impressed...must submit my comments!!!

May 17th, 2004

Great site, at last a place to share information advice on price awareness, and vent your spleen.

It's hard enough to locate the general forums, i think you should have a link to it from the main navigational rollover area

Great to see more and more people speaking up against "rip off Ireland" - sadly, I fear we won't achieve much in the short term however.

I reckon we should be giving all the Euro election candidates an earful on the issue of Rip Off Ireland - any thoughts ?

April 22nd, 2004

Great site. Finally sick to death of being ripped off in Ireland and saying nothing

April 4th, 2004

Your site is badly needed, how about highlighting one of the biggest rip-offs if not the biggest i.e. learner drivers being charged up to 35  euros an hour by unregistered, unlicensed and untrained driving "schools " and "instructors". Keep it up!

February 19th, 2004

We stumbled across this gem of a web site whilst researching our "Attitudes" feature. This is a fantastic resource for anyone hacked off at poor product quality and at high prices in Ireland.

This site gives Irish people tips on how to respectfully complain effectively to business owners about faulty products, and how also to commend business owners who offer good products and services.

If you own a business, it will give you inspiration to excel in the areas of customer service and product quality, and give you ideas as to how you can deal effectively with genuine customer complaints about products.

There's lots to read, and you can use it as a barometer to test the attitudes of the Irish shopping public. It could just give you the market edge. March 2004, Irish Entrepreneur

February 18th, 2004

Well your tips told me to compliment as well as complain, so here's a compliment. This site is great! It gets the point over without being over zealous about complaining. Advising the consumer on the best approach to handling bad service is just what Ireland needs.

Do you know when you're just after finishing a meal and a member of the staff asks if everything was ok and you tell them it was just alright or it was not alright, sometimes they look taken aback that you spoke your mind!
That reaction always makes me smile.  It's case of "You shouldn't ask, cos you might not hear what you want to hear!". I think "Everything was fine" flows off Irish tongues far too easily.

Giving good feedback is definitely something that should be encouraged in Ireland, as well as giving bad feedback.

February 16th, 2004

well done on the site...

February 11th, 2004

The Value Card is a great idea

February 9th, 2004

Good website folks. Any chance of you highlighting this issue ??

If Oil is priced in Dollars; how come the price of Petrol has not changed by much since the slide of the dollar ??

Comments posted here. Let us know your thoughts on this.

From Value Ireland - everyone's entitled to their opinion we suppose. We're not sure if there's good value in spelling lessons in Lidl in Baldoyle, but we'll check it out.

February 8th, 2004

Great site I love it...

January 22nd, 2004

Fantastic site, by the way!  Thanks.

January 21st, 2004

Just reviewed your site, which I must admit I was not aware existed. It's excellent, so well done.

January 21st, 2004

I could go on and on but I am just delighted to have found a site that we as consumers can air our Euro grievances.

January 16th, 2004

Good work - having spent a few days in Ireland recently I can agree that it truly is rip off central - and I live in NY, the previous capital of rip off!!!

January 15th, 2004

May I take this opportunity to commend you on your decisive action in regard to combating this ridiculous situation the population of Ireland has let itself become so submissive to, I think it is shameful that Irish people are so apathetic and ignorant to the farce that surrounds them in their everyday lives.  Hopefully with your attempt to educate and inform people of the state of affairs we’re subject to we can all stand up, take notice and work together as a force against these tyrants of globalization!

December 26th, 2003

I think this forum is brilliant. And yes I will and have recommended it to family and friends.

December 11th, 2003

Many thanks and congratulations on your website. Maybe you could include Mary Harneys email address on your site so we could email her the many instances of price hiking which she so believes either is not going on, or is our own fault for not shopping around. I for one would like to be able to shop around for a cost effective postal delivery service as I believe the one I am being forced to use at the moment has become another Euro rip off, along with my electricity service.
Thanks again

From Value Ireland - I'm sure it won't come as a surprise to many people, but this e-mail address isn't readily available. Will continue to follow up.

December 6th, 2003 - Just checked out the site and think it's great. I have a suggestion for those wishing to purchase DVD players and Movies to go to websites like ebay and purchase a code free player. This will allow people to buy DVD's from Canada, the USA and any other regions and play them at home in Ireland.

December 6th, 2003 - (Found on www.rollercoaster.ie) - Hi, I came across a good site, www.valueireland.com. It is a discussion forum based on products/services which are poor value or great value for money. Its well worth a look.

December 2nd, 2003 - Congratulations on your website! Although I only clicked on it by accident. You need to advertise it more!

From Value Ireland - A number of suggestions were kindly provided following this comment with regards to promotion of the site. We are glad to take note, and follow up on all suggestions where possible.

If you have any suggestions for Value Ireland, please click here to contact us.

December 1st, 2003 - Excellent site - well done. If enough people are motivated to complain maybe the powers that be might do something.......dream on.

November 26th, 2003 - We do wish you well with your endeavors and thank you for highlighting the needs of consumers and hope that you gain success from the venture. Dermott Jewell, Chief Executive, Consumers Association of Ireland

November 21st, 2003 - love your website.  I think we are being ripped off in the area of computers, specifically laptops.  On the Dell website I have compared prices for the same laptop "Dell Inspiron 5100" and it is much cheaper  by a few hundred Euro in other EU countries, not to mention almost half price in the U.S..  I can't understand this as I thought they were manufactured in Limerick.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

October 31st, 2003 - Just visited your site for the first time and think its a great idea. One problem I have noticed is when I went to buy a new TV the prices where the same everywhere I looked and its not just TVs and that's a big problem. Tell us what you think, good or bad. Click here.

October 23rd, 2003 - Came across your site today and think it's great! People love the chance to have a rant! Tell us what you think, good or bad. Click here.

October 23rd, 2003 - To be honest -I also feel it also takes much of the credence from your site - reducing it to a message board where anyone can say whatever they like - be it true or false. Pity - its a good idea. Tell us what you think, good or bad. Click here.

From Value Ireland - We ask that all users are aware of our Legal Guidelines before posting on the Value Ireland Forum. As you will see there, if we believe any posts to be unsuitable, they will be removed immediately. We will also investigate any complaints we may receive in order to determine the validity of any posts questioned.

October 5th, 2003 - I was delighted to see this article and will use it regularly. It said that people can access this site and give information to others on best places and value for money. Keep up the appreciative work. Tell us what you think, good or bad. Click here.

September 25th, 2003 - keep up the good work. your site is excellent and much needed. please consider putting up a car sales section. (Done! - Click here) Tell us what you think, good or bad. Click here.

September 24th, 2003 - If you're going to set up a site that focuses on reviewing/criticizing other businesses, then you should make sure your site is 100% functional 100% of the time. I couldn't log in and it's not very easy to access the area to make a complaint. Surely this should be the most prominent link on the home page? (Points made here have been addressed - if you have any site problems, please click here to email us).

No offense but I hope you can take it as well as give it! The idea is good and I hope it becomes a success, standards of service are shocking in this country, and prices are out of control. Tell us what you think, good or bad. Click here.

August 26th, 2003 - I've registered and I am already mouthing off about various stuff.  I am the world's worst complainer so I love this sort of thing. I'll pass it on to anyone I can. Tell us what you think, good or bad. Click here.

August 15th, 2003 - Think its a really good idea, hope it takes off. Have forwarded it to everyone in my address and hopefully they will do the same forwarding. Best of luck with it. Tell us what you think, good or bad. Click here.
