Value Ireland was today quoted in Eddie Lennons article "The Net is Bursting With Free Stuff". The great positive review of the Value Ireland site in the Sunday Tribune went as follows:

A leaner, more focused site is valueireland. com. It's tiny compared to askaboutmoney.com, but there's a very useful advice section which can save you a fortune. It provides a concise and very readable overview of things you need to look out for when shelling out your hard earned cash, such as hiring a tradesperson, shopping online, avoiding excessive mobile phone charges.

September 4th, 2007 - SayNoTo1890.com - New Value Ireland Website Launched

In previous posts on the Value Ireland Blog (in July and August) I wrote about an article written by Paul Kelly in the Irish Examiner about how calling Irish businesses and organisations was costing Irish consumers more than it should do.

This is because calling Locall and Callsave (1890 and 1850) numbers is not normally included in bundles of minutes that consumers get with their mobile or landline packages.

In his article, Paul provide some regular phone numbers which could be used instead of these Locall and Callsave numbers to call certain companies. We followed up by providing some more in August. By calling these alternative numbers, consumers can use up their inclusive minutes, rather than paying extra for the calls.

We have now set up a new website, http://www.saynoto1890.com/ which will provide consumers with an up to date listing of alternative phone numbers which can be used instead of to Locall and Callsave numbers.

We invite you to keep a book mark of this site for future use, and if you have any numbers that we should know about, please let us know at info@valueireland.com.

RTE inspired by Value Ireland research into price of tyres. From this mornings Morning Ireland programme, they broadcast the following research.

TYRE PRICES SLASHED OUTSIDE DUBLIN - Continuing our occasional look at rip-off Ireland, and with an eye on safer driving in the holiday period, today we turn our attention to  the best and worst value in car tyres. We priced tyres for a typical family car - our choice was a 1.6 litre Ford Mondeo.

We rang the big two tyre retail brands, Advance Pitstop and Kwik Fit,  looking for quotes on four Dunlop and Firestone tyres.

For Dunlop, Kwik Fit in Coolock in north Dublin is charging €90 a tyre. That is cheaper than either of the Advance Pitstop outlets we tried. Advance is running an advertising campaign at the moment which boasts you should not bother shopping around. Our survey begs to differ.

We found Advance were the dearest for the Dunlop tyre specification we were looking for at shops in Walkinstown and Naas Road in Dublin. The cost - €100 a tyre.

If you go to Fermoy Tyres in County Cork or Bargain Tyres in Kilkenny - the latter says he has a special offer going at the moment - you could slash around €30 a tyre off those Advance Pitstop prices -  giving you an overall saving on a set of four tyres of €120.

The situation is not much different for Firestone. The cheapest in our ring around were, once again, Bargain Tyres in  Kilkenny at €60 and Fermoy Tyres in Cork which was charging €70 euro. So if you live in Dublin, perhaps it is worth the drive to make the saving.

Value Irelands research into the price of tyres, and specifically Advance Pitstop can be read by clicking here.

No ESB switch
CONSUMERS get the right to use a potentially cheaper electricity supplier than ESB this Saturday, but it won't be as easy as flicking a switch.

Market observers question whether it will be worthwhile for ESB competitors to cater to new customers other than businesses.

Details of the half dozen contenders to ESB can be found on the website of the Commission for Energy Regulation (www.cer.ie).

Value Ireland has carried out its own research into what the electricity market will be like for Irish consumers after market de-regulation. This article will be published on the website on February 20th.

In late September, a user reported what they perceived to be a rip off when trading in a car with a Dublin garage. This was seen, and strongly disputed, by the garage concerned. As per the Value Ireland legal statement, we followed up to confirm the contents of the post, which we were able to do.

In the mean time, the garage concerned had posted an offer of a €200 discount to any Value Ireland user who buys or orders a car from them. If this offer is of interest to you, you only have to print the relevant web page, and bring to the garage to receive the offer.

To find out more details, to access the page that should be printed, and to read the posts which lead to this offer for Value Ireland users, please click here.
